EDD creates beautiful and thoughtful designs to modernize your workspace.
EDD creates beautiful and thoughtful designs to modernize your workspace.
EDD was tasked to renovate the entire interior of this preexisting office space. New designs incorporated a “training wing” that housed a training room and multiple conference rooms, all equipped with state-of-the-art audio-visual system. Keeping in mind the client’s needs, the wing was designed to be catering accessible and large enough for seminars or group training sessions.
To facilitate more in-office collaboration, EDD designed the perimeter offices with full height glass walls, workstations with low panels, and a large break room that could serve as an informal staff gathering area.
EDD provided design and project management services during all phases of development at this corporation’s multiple campus locations. Several tasks included space planning and restacking of 236,500 rentable square feet of occupied space.
The projects required extensive move management supervision to ensure a smooth transition for its employees. EDD created detailed move schedules and contact lists for all parties involved, including the design, construction, IT, and security teams, to maintain seamless efficiency.
Since 1990, EDD has been privileged to perform design services for the Agency work space every 10 years. New technology and organizational requirements called for a major overhaul.
The building that AFP occupies, Southern Railway, was constructed in 1929. This historic structure features low ceilings and densely spaced structural members. Difficulties in design and trade coordination emerged when resolving conflicts between the systems in the plenum and under low profile raised floor. Working with decision makers we’ve devised and executed a sophisticated plan with relocation swing spaces for each phase.
Because of these challenges, seeing the project reach its completion gave us more satisfaction than most.
Commissioned by HHMI, “Dr. ‘Bert’” created a kinetic sculpture that illustrates a “thinking man” inside of a massive brain. EDD was hired to adapt an existing community room to serve as the mobile’s permanent backdrop. Our Specialty Design & Fabrication team coordinated with the artist and HHMI facility managers to develop an installation process with minimal disturbances.
With the first phase of a multi-year, six-phase, 74,000 sf modernization complete, EDD is helping HHMI realize their vision for a light filled and fresh new work environment.
Recognizing that the original design of private offices is functionally still what worked best for the majority of the employees, the renovation focused on finishes, furniture and new energy efficient lighting. Where possible, collaboration areas for four to eight people replaced individual and shared offices. Glazing replaced drywall walls at Huddle Rooms, Conference Rooms, private offices and the IT Help Desk.
A focus on Diversity and Inclusion will drive additional new space types as the modernization continues.
“Lateral Motion” is our latest project with artist Phlyssa Koshland. Koshland provided a 1:4 maquette of the sculpture and Ben Gurion University (BGU) in Israel dedicated a large (33’ x 14’) wood-paneled wall at the National Institute for Biotechnology in Nagev, to house the sculpture. EDD’s role was to build, finish, deliver, and install the completed sculpture in Israel.
The scope of work involved things such as converting the model in to a 3-D shop drawing. Design and fabrication of custom joints to connect custom-finished molecular spheres. Design and fabrication of suspension method for the entire piece using only 4 attachment points.
EDD overcame the logistical challenges of fabrication in the United States and installation in Israel.
With 1.6 million square feet of space and 8,700 employees at their Northern Virginia headquarters, this facility was challenged with an inefficient use of space. Eighth Day Design identified deficiencies, addressed the need for new corporate standards, and developed prototypical plans for a campus space modernization.
These adopted concepts became the “road map” for a 5-year modernization project. The results provided a more flexible workplace that utilizes modern technology and the integration of collaborative spaces.
This 18 foot outdoor sculpture is designed to symbolize the continuity of scientific work. Large elements were water jet cut from a 3/4” aluminum plate and connected to each other with slip joints. Each joint is secured with a custom bracket that is through-bolted with studs and fastened with shallow dome nuts. All surfaces are hand-finished and clear-coated to withstand the weather. The sculpture is attached to the top of a stone pedestal in the center of a large planter. Four computer controlled lights complete the installation.
The 3,000 square foot design is inspired by the wishing well folklore; a place where dreamers go to make their wishes come true. Hemington wanted their space to serve as a physical representation of a better, brighter, financial future for its clients.
The open tread stair way, glass partitions, and open layout of the office work to emphasize a theme of financial transparency. Wood finishes and organic shades of lime green and neutral tones work together to reinforce Hemington’s unique identity; a true balance between dream and reality.
Having outgrown the first space that EDD designed for FCP in 2011, EDD created a new 14,000 sf space for FCP which would provide plenty of flexible and multi-functional spaces for the next 10 yr lease term. The color palette complemented FCP’s new branding.
A variety of conference spaces accommodating from 4, 6, 8, 12 and up to 24 people were co-located with a contemporary coffee bar and break out space. Open office areas included nearby phone rooms and occasional seating for informal collaboration. A light filled break room and wellness room provided employees a variety of spaces to recharge.
Eighth Day Design implemented FM:Systems, FM: Interact Integrated Workplace Management System (IWMS) as a replacement for a legacy, non-supported, system at the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). Since that time, EDD has assisted USPTO with both on-site and remote support for its IWMS. EDD has also helped the client grow their use of the system including adding users and increasing functionality.
Our staff provides daily space management updates, process improvements, Help Desk support, and administrator level support to our US PTO client.
After designing their original office space in a converted warehouse in 2007, EDD was asked by ADI General Contracting to create a company lounge in adjacent expansion space in 2014.
The converted warehouse space was to be multi-functional and a place where employees and site workers alike could relax after a hard day’s work. With a long established corporate theme exploring construction materials, we utilized existing wall brick/CMU patterns to create a locomotive garage. EDD created the original photographs of the locomotive called “The President” on a visit to the C&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore and printed on 8 foot by 11 foot fabric stretched over low profile framing.
EDD is providing support to our client as they update their as-built drawing database for historical construction knowledge. Our team is providing drawing conversion and verification of its historical drawings and converting them into an electronic format for future use. Initial CAD work has identified the need for as-built on-site surveys that will help the client have a better handle on the internal workings of its buildings.
EDD is working with the university architect and facility department on the implementation of FM:Interact software to support the university growth and its need to understand how space is utilized beyond a student capacity.
The university will implement the higher education survey module that manages research grants to help identify how much space is needed to predict long-term strategic growth.
EDD is supporting their FM:Interact software implementation initiative. We are introducing space and move management to this growing pharmaceutical company. The client is seeing immediate and future growth while supporting the emergence of new products. This presents an ever-changing environment that EDD will help the client manage.
OSF has been a long term client of FM:Systems and EDD is now helping to update, and integrate, their facilities management processes. We are assisting in a long term FM:Interact implementation plan, and the configuration of their Facility Maintenance module across regional facilities, including 13 hospitals. EDD will also integrate their HR people management software with FM:Interact to provide instant updates to their space management team and streamline efficiency.
EDD is working with this global corporation to evaluate maintenance on their building equipment to provide a long-term strategy for life-cycle management programs.
We work with their facility maintenance team to identify weaknesses in their current facility maintenance process to help gain more useful life out of their building equipment. This in turn allows the client to create a Capital Improvement Plan that addresses needs before they become an emergency due to a building system failure.
EDD is currently assisting with the development and growth of this software company’s internal real estate and space management program. Offered to clients worldwide, EDD is staffed full time to support the development of internal client move management teams and the daily efforts towards the development of software.
The Children’s Learning Lab (CLL) is an excellent representation of EDD’s commitment to design, creativity, and unique project customization. The project included 1,200 sf of floor to ceiling renovations and custom-made furniture and fixtures for the CLL’s reception area.
The entryway is the first thing that catches your eye as you walk into the CLL Reception. The holographic archway lights up the entire room and the cloud-like shape of the portal makes you feel like you are walking straight into a dream. 3-Form acrylics with a dichroic inner film were used to achieve the holographic finish, and lighting from within illuminate the portal.
As you enter through the archway into the main reception area, users will notice the custom digitally printed wallpaper with various scenes of day and night. The pixelated carpet works in conjunction with the wall paper to create the illusion of land, beach, and sea, while paying homage to HHMI’s company colors of green and blue. New custom built furniture, shelvings, and banquette was installed for additional storage and seating space. The reception desk toward the back is shaped like a sail boat, complete with a wooden mast, cloth sail, and even a mini light house.
Every corner of this project has another detail with something new to discover, it is truly a masterpiece of imagination, design, and detail.
